BRTA Withdraws Order Against CNG Auto-Rickshaw Drivers After Protests

BRTA Withdraws Order Against CNG Auto-Rickshaw Drivers After Protests
Dhaka, February 15: The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has withdrawn its previous directive instructing the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to take legal action against CNG-run auto-rickshaws for not following the government-set metered fare rates.

The decision was reversed after many auto-rickshaw drivers blocked city streets and others went on a work abstention in protest against the order.

On February 10, BRTA had issued a letter to the DMP Commissioner, instructing legal measures against CNG auto-rickshaw drivers who refused to charge fares according to the meter.

According to the relevant law, violators could face a maximum penalty of six months in jail or a fine of Tk 50,000 for not complying with the metered fare system.

The sudden withdrawal of the order comes amid ongoing tensions between transport authorities and auto-rickshaw drivers over fare regulations in Dhaka.
