Joy Seeks India's Intervention to Hold Elections Within 90 Days
Following widespread student and public protests, Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, was ousted from power on August 5th and has since fled to India. Since then, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has been making various statements to different international media outlets.

Joy has repeatedly claimed that his mother, Sheikh Hasina, did not resign. He has now expressed a desire for new elections to be held within the next three months, or 90 days. He hopes that India will take steps to facilitate this process, according to a report by the Indian Express.

For the past 15 years, India has provided unwavering support to the Awami League government. Even after three controversial national elections, India continued its exclusive backing of the party. This has become an open secret in the politics of both Delhi and Dhaka. Now, having lost power, Sajeeb Wazed Joy hopes that the Indian government will act swiftly to arrange elections in Bangladesh.

Speaking to the Indian Express on Wednesday, Joy said, "I hope that India will ensure that elections are held within the 90-day constitutional timeframe, that the unrest will stop, and that the Awami League will be allowed to campaign and rebuild. If that happens, I am still confident that we will win the election. We remain the most popular party."

The protest movement, which began as a demand for reform of the quota system, quickly escalated into a full-blown call for the government's resignation. In response to the deaths of students and mass arrests during the quota reform protests, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement launched a non-cooperation campaign. On Monday, despite a curfew, massive crowds flooded the streets of Dhaka.

In the face of this unrest, Joy advised his mother, Sheikh Hasina, to leave the country.

Regarding the events of that day, Joy further stated, "My mother had no intention of leaving the country. She was about to resign, submit her resignation letter to the President, and make a public announcement through a video message. She had drafted her statement and was preparing to record it. Everything was planned. But when she was about to start recording, members of the special security forces said, 'Ma'am, there is no time. We need to leave now.'"

"The special security forces took her to a secure location within a military airbase. A helicopter was ready there. But she did not want to go. That's when my aunt (Sheikh Rehana) called me. I convinced my mother that for her safety, she needed to leave. If the crowd found her, and if shots were fired, many people would be killed. Either she would be blamed for the deaths, or if they captured her, they would kill her. So, the best option was to leave the country, and I was the one who persuaded her to do so."
