The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has filed two separate cases against former Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, and his wife, Me Hla Prue, over allegations of illicit wealth accumulation and suspicious financial transactions.

According to ACC sources, the former minister and his wife are accused of amassing approximately Tk 125 million (US$ 1.06 million) in undeclared assets. Additionally, transactions worth around Tk 730 million (US$ 6.2 million) are under investigation due to concerns over money laundering and unexplained fund movements.

The cases have been lodged under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, the Money Laundering Prevention Act, and Section 109 of the Penal Code of Bangladesh.

Earlier this year, in February 2025, a court imposed a travel ban on Bir Bahadur, his wife Me Hla Prue, and their three children — U Sing Hai, Thowai Shwe Wang, and Mya Mya Kheng Venus — following a request by the ACC.

The ACC’s petition argued that Bir Bahadur had abused his position of power to accumulate significant wealth beyond known sources of income. It also cited credible intelligence that the accused and his family were planning to leave the country, which could obstruct the investigation.

An ACC official confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Legal action will be pursued based on evidence obtained during the inquiry.
