Anisul and Salman F Rahman Granted 10-Day Remand
A Dhaka court has granted a 10-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Huq and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's advisor Salman F Rahman in connection with a murder case filed over the death of a street vendor during clashes related to the quota reform movement.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court in Dhaka granted the remand on Wednesday evening following a hearing based on a request from the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB).

Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman were brought to the court under tight security at around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. During their appearance, pro-BNP lawyers staged a protest outside the CMM Court premises, demanding justice. Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed at the court for security.

The clashes that led to the case took place on July 16 in front of Dhaka College during an anti-discrimination student movement. Two people died in the incident: Sabuj Ali (26), a student of Dhaka College, and Md Shahjahan (26), a street vendor.

Following the incident, two murder cases were filed at New Market Police Station. Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman were arrested in connection with the death of Shahjahan, with authorities naming them as instigators. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed their arrests on Tuesday.

Amid escalating protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position on August 5 and left the country. Members of her cabinet and other Awami League leaders reportedly went into hiding, with some fleeing the country. Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman were among those arrested and taken into DB custody.

Anisul Huq was a prominent lawyer who served as the prosecutor for the state in the trial for the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In the 2014 elections, he was nominated by the Awami League to run for the Brahmanbaria-4 (Akhaura and Kasba) constituency. After being elected as a Member of Parliament, Sheikh Hasina appointed him as the Law Minister, a position he held since then.
